If you’ve spent any time in Prescott’s live music scene, chances are you’ve crossed paths with London & Ping — the duo (plus two) known for blending country and classic rock with equal parts heart and humor. We sat down with the band to talk gear, ghosts and why none of them plan on retiring anytime soon.
Prescott NOW: How long have you been playing together as a band?
London & Ping Band: The current lineup has been together a little over a year, but Doug and Layne go back more than four years, which explains the synchronized eye rolls.
Prescott NOW: What’s the story behind the band’s name?
London & Ping Band: It’s an ancient musical phrase loosely translated as “two guys who wouldn’t stop buying guitars.”
Prescott NOW: How do you connect with the audience during a show?
London & Ping Band: Between the songs, the stories and the occasional smart remark, we try to make every crowd feel like old friends.
Prescott NOW: How would you describe your sound?
London & Ping Band: An eclectic mix of country and classic rock … with country winning most of the arguments.
Prescott NOW: What was the most memorable moment of your career so far?
London & Ping Band: Between the four of us, there have been a lot of memorable moments over the years, but playing Prescott’s historic Elks Theatre always feels special. You can feel the history in that room, and maybe a few ghosts judging the setlist.
Prescott NOW: What advice would you give your younger self?
Doug: I wouldn’t. He wouldn’t listen anyway.
Layne: Buy Microsoft and Apple … and maybe hang on to them.
George: Cottage cheese isn’t as bad as you think.
Aaron: Most of the things you worry about never actually happen.
Prescott NOW: What motivates your band to perform?
London & Ping Band: Good crowds, good friends, and the fact that none of us know how to retire properly.
Prescott NOW: What brought you to Prescott?
London & Ping Band: A moving van. And the realization that Prescott is a pretty great place to grow older without growing up.
