The annual Prescott Martin Luther King Peace and Justice March and Celebration will be held Monday, Jan. 19. This year’s theme is Good Trouble Every Day, reflecting Dr. King’s philosophy, as spread by John Lewis, of getting into “good trouble” to advance civil rights.
Marchers will assemble between 9:30 and 10 a.m. at the Prescott College Welcome Center, 202 Grove Ave., and then at 10 a.m. march around the Courthouse Plaza to the musical accompaniment of Meg Bohrman. The march will conclude at the Prescott United Methodist Church, 505 W. Gurley St.
Prior to the march between 9:45 and 9:55 a.m., Manuel Lucero will perform a Native American Smudging Ceremony, and from 9:55 to 10 a.m., the Prescott Bucket List drumline will perform.
A program of dynamic speakers, music and celebration will be held at the church starting at 11 a.m. This year’s program will include a teen keynote speaker who will give their perspective on the MLK Day theme. A kids program also will be offered in a separate room where younger children can sing songs and play games.
Afterward, two break-out sessions will be offered where attendees can have discussions with keynote speaker Dr. Coral Evans or with Spoken Word speaker Truth B. Told, discussing how MLK’s principles for nonviolent protest can be applied today.
