REALTORS® & Clients:Prioritizing Safety Every Step of the Way

Friday, Aug. 29, 2025

submitted by the Prescott Area Association of REALTORS®

September is REALTOR® safety month. Working in such a public-facing industry puts agents at a higher risk for potential harm, theft or scams. The National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) offers a safety program with practical tips and strategies to help its members stay safe.

But how can you make safety a priority when buying or selling your home?

Meet with multiple REALTORS® to find the best fit when selling your home. Ask about their experience and communication style. The home buying and selling process is complex, so choose someone trustworthy with your best interest in mind.

Be your REALTORS® “safety partner” to protect your home and belongings. Have them verify that they checked and locked the home after any showings, and double check all locks and scout for missing items once you return home. This will help ensure that nothing is missing and the home remains secure.

Not all agents or clients are who they say they are. You should never show your home alone. REALTOR® members with the Prescott Area Association of REALTORS® (PAAR) have access to Forewarn, a system that runs instant background checks with just a name or phone number. This helps protect them and you from potential harm or fraud. If someone reaches out directly about showing your home, refer them to your REALTOR® so proper safety steps can be taken.

In Arizona’s rural areas, cell service can be spotty. Always make sure you have a lifeline by telling someone where you are going, when you leave and when you return. These properties may also be on non-maintained roads or only accessible by high-clearance vehicles. While it’s tempting to ride together, it’s important for homebuyers to drive separately to a showing even if that means renting or borrowing a high-clearance vehicle.

Homebuyers should avoid going to showings after dark to better stay alert and aware of their surroundings.

After purchasing your home, remember to break down all of the moving boxes and put them in garbage bags before throwing them out. A bunch of empty boxes out by the curb could trigger would-be thieves.

Working with a REALTOR® adds a layer of protection, experience and trust. Their knowledge and resources help keep you and your property safe throughout the buying or selling process.
